Welcome aboard

With the latest session of the Utah State Legislature behind us, it’s time to turn our attention to the business at hand. That includes ensuring our local and special districts’ board members are in compliance with the law.

One of the benefits of membership in the Utah Association of Special Districts is the ready availability of the latest requirements, as well as the required board-member certification and additional training.

The board-member certification requires all officials to receive Open Meetings Act training each year. Newly appointed or elected board members must receive additional training within a year of accepting a position on a local or special district’s board.

There are a few ways to comply, and there are dire consequences if you ignore it.

• Districts can arrange for training by contacting the Utah Association of Special Districts. We can then make sure your board members meet the latest requirements as of the recent legislative session.
• Training is also available through an Online Training Portal sponsored by the Office of the State Auditors.
• Instruction is available at the annual UASD Convention. This year, it will be held Nov. 1-3 at the Davis Conference Center in Layton.
