If we had a choice between working in a cramped, uncomfortable office or working in a comfortable space, we’d all pick the latter. Even though you probably can’t change the physical area of your workspace, there are some adjustments you can make to turn a cramped cubicle into a productive work space.
You work at a desk, which means you’re sitting for extended periods of the day. Your first improvement needs to be your chair. This is not the time for an uncomfortable place to sit. You spend hours a day in it, so make sure you find one that supports your spine and can be easily adjusted to fit your body. Your employer might not be too keen on buying you a new chair, so this might be an investment you’ll have to make on your own. Just be sure to take it with you when you move on to a new opportunity.
How your desk is situated can have a big impact on how you feel at the end of your work day. Keeping your monitor at eye level puts less stress on your back and shoulders. If you use something to prop it up with, make sure it’s sturdy enough to support the monitor, like a stack of books. Keep office supplies close by as well so you have what you need within arm’s reach.
Light can have a big impact on how we handle things and office light is notoriously bad most of the time. If you’re lucky enough to have windows in your office that provide a good amount of natural light, it probably makes your workplace easier to work in. But fluorescent lights can be very harsh, making it harder to concentrate. An easy way to solve a light problem is by adding more of the right kind. Keep a lamp on your desk to use on darker days or when you need a softer light.
Make a conscious effort to get away from your desk every few hours throughout the day. If you get busy and forget to take a break, try setting an alarm on your phone to remind you. Use the restroom, get a snack or take a quick walk around the building. It’s good for your eyes to get away from the screen and your muscles will thank you for moving them around.
Work is a necessary part of our lives, but that doesn’t mean your work space has to feel like a torture chamber. Take a look at what works and what needs improving at your desk. Customizing your work station will help you feel more relaxed and comfortable at work.
