The importance of being prepared

If we’ve learned anything from the stream of natural disasters hitting the nation in recent weeks, it is the importance of being prepared.

Here at the Utah Association of Special Districts, that’s our M.O. We are constantly in preparation for coming legislative sessions, helping our member districts meet legislative requirements and keeping watch over pending legislation that will affect our members’ operations.

On still another level, we’re prepared in the services our member districts offer. From firefighters and mosquito control to our water districts, we’re prepared to step forward when needed, often before situations arise, and make a difference.

And as stories coming out of the hurricane zones prove, being prepared is important in our personal lives as well. It’s about more than tucking away a few gallons of clean water, though that’s a good start, as witnessed in the recent Utah Prepare Expo. We’re talking about lifestyle changes that prepare you to handle whatever comes your way.

• Believe in yourself. You are capable of great things, if only you believe. Put that mindset in place as you start assembling the building blocks of being prepared.
• Focus on what is important and don’t let distractions derail your efforts. It’s easy to get caught up in the little things that pop up around us every day but with the right focus, we can make sure what must be done is in place.
• Open your mind to variations. If you realize, in focusing on something important to you, that there’s a better way to achieve it, change direction. Adapt, learn and, with your goal firmly in sight, succeed!
