Why do people go into public service? It’s a question that a new generation is asking. Millennials are choosing to make a difference outside of the government agencies created to provide those services. In some cases, such as law enforcement, veterans and recruits alike are second-guessing their decision to serve.

That’s why, here at the Utah Association of Special Districts, we make a point of showing our appreciation for the men and women among our members who continue to serve the communities who created and continue to support their efforts.

The reasons people choose a career in public service are numerous, and they echo Schwarzenegger’s sentiments:

• They want to make a difference. It’s important to them to serve their communities and people in need of their efforts. They see the merit of their work in what is accomplished through the hundreds of districts handling animal control, parks and recreation, water conservation and more.
• It is personally rewarding. They feel good about themselves and feel their lives have meaning. That sense of satisfaction can’t be defined in dollars and cents.
• They have something to contribute, whether it is expertise, talents or time. They go into service professions, for the most part, realizing that they won’t earn the compensation those same skills would draw in the public sector. But most say that doesn’t matter. They take home a sense of fulfillment that money can’t buy.
