Another productive legislative session is behind us. You might think we’re sitting back and catching our breath here at the Utah Association of Special Districts.

That sounds inviting, we must admit. But that’s not the kind of approach that gets the job done for local and special service districts. Our members deserve better.

A number of last-minute proposals are now under review. A few, if passed, could affect our districts for better or worse. But as you’ll see in our list of membership benefits and resources, this is just one of many components of our mission.

Here’s a look at what’s underway at UASD:

• Our annual convention is coming up Nov. 1-3 at the Davis Conference Center in Layton. We’re planning a platform that will include a look at 2018 sessions. We host guest speakers and presentations that set the stage for our legislative efforts.
• Our Pocket Guide for Legislators, as well as ongoing encounters with Utah’s elected lawmakers, helps familiarize officials with local and special districts and their mission. Communication is key to working together toward the best outcomes. We encourage our members to personally reach out to legislators during this time.
• At our convention and throughout the year, our training programs will help you make sense of the latest requirements. That’s particularly true for board members. We help local and special districts ensure they are in total compliance.

At UASD, supporting our members’ districts is a year-round effort. It’s a mission we take seriously. We are always available if you have questions or concerns. Our fellow Utahns’ quality of life is at stake. Together, we have made a difference, and we will continue to do so.
