Have you seen the commercial yet where a popular water softener company shows all the ways we “drink” water?
It’s catchy, kind of fun, and concludes with the obvious, “Your whole house drinks water!” Stop to think about that for a minute. Your dog drinks water. Your skin drinks water. Your pasta drinks water. And in Utah, we should lift a glass to the water conservancy and improvement districts that make it all possible.
Of all the local and special service districts, these are the ones that you probably deal with on a daily basis, even if it’s not face-to-face. With good reason, too! Water is life and there’s much more hanging in the balance.
Here are a few ways we might show our appreciation:
• Conserve water! Replace your shower heads and toilets with water-efficient models. Put a WaterSense controller on your outdoor sprinkler system. Watch what you send down the drain; F.O.G. is an easy way to remember fats, oil and grease! Every little lifestyle change makes a big difference in the end.
• Take advantage of their outreach programs, many times doubling as an entertaining night out for the family, a pumpkin festival, or workshops helping teachers work Utah’s water issues into their STEM and STEAM curriculum. Not only will you better understand what they’re doing, but you’ll train your children to step into their shoes down the road, leaving our future in good hands!
• Give them the support they need to do their jobs right. That’s something we do at the Utah Association of Special Districts, representing our member local and special service districts as new legislation is introduced. For the general public, it may mean agreeing to a small rate increase in order to fund needed updates.
In short, our water and sewer districts continue to deliver an essential and quality product right to our homes at a low, manageable cost. Lift a cup today to our water conservancy and improvement districts – they’re on the job for you!
