First impressions

Unfair or not, people who meet you for the first time often arrive at an opinion of you within the first seven seconds.

It’s called the first impression, and it’s one that lasts. That’s why, in a year when the Utah State Legislature will include many new faces, UASD realizes it’s more important than ever to make sure that first encounter is a good one.

So what exactly makes a good first impression?

• Appearance counts. That’s true for a few reasons. Present yourself in a good light, including clothing, hair and accessories. Prepare early–don’t wear a rumpled raincoat–and give yourself a comfortable time span. When you like the way you look, it will carry over into the confidence you bring to that all-important first meeting.
• Pay attention to body language. A smile is important, but if it’s not genuine, studies show, it will have the reverse effect on your companion. This is where a firm handshake and a casual, friendly approach to conversation speak volumes.
• Remember the essentials. Arrive at your meeting on time. Turn off your cellphone. Listen attentively. You’re not going to learn anything new if you do all of the talking.

Most importantly, just be yourself. The honesty will go far in making a first impression you’ll appreciate.
