Assembling the perfect board for your special or local district is always a bit of a challenge, isn’t it?

Few are in it for the money. Some think it will help them look good. Then you have those who genuinely believe in what you stand for and want to make a difference.

At the Utah Association of Special Districts, we help your board members stay up on the latest legislative requirements and get the proper training.

Your task is the more daunting. You must find qualified board members who work well with others, aren’t allergic to meetings and have your best interests at heart. And we’re here to help.

Here are the signs of superior board members:

• Do they have a passion for what you’re doing? Can you see him jumping into the meetings and actively interacting with his fellow board members? We take passion over knowledge every time and in the end, we always learn something from these people.
• Are they willing to put in time? Will they prepare ahead of meetings and participate on committees when they are needed to put plans into action?
• Are they financially strong enough to give generously when needed to serve others? This goes beyond finances. Do board members have the time and drive to serve your constituents?
• Finally, do they have an open mind? You want to hear their ideas, of course. Their fresh input is vital to your organization’s health. But they should not only listen to others but also seek out more information on proposals.

When board members arrive with the right mindset of serving their fellow Utahns, it’s hard to go wrong.
