An honest day’s work

How do you define an honest day’s work?

The obvious answer, given the phrase’s origin, is what you need to accomplish to get an honest wage. More broadly, you might say an honest day’s work brings a return, of sorts, including but not limited to wages.

That definition would include artists such as musicians, actors and visual artists who frequently see little to no financial return on their efforts. Yet ironically, art allows us to experience better brain activity and less stress, as scientific studies have demonstrated.

Somewhere in the middle are the men and women in public service, including those who work for the local and special districts that make up the Utah Association of Special Districts. Their quest is a unique one. They preserve the quality of life for all Utahns through a variety of services. At UASD, we’re committed to giving them what they need to put in an honest day’s work.

• We provide the training, encouragement and networking opportunities our members need. This ensures our local and special districts remain in compliance with legislative orders and stay out of the shadows. Too many people don’t understand the purpose and responsibilities of their local districts, and we’re here to change that.
• Together, we pursue common goals. That’s especially evident during the legislative sessions, when we monitor proposals that will affect our local and special districts and explain our concerns to Utah’s lawmakers. But the larger picture is our common goal of providing our constituents with the best services, whether through water conservation, mosquito control or parks maintenance.
• Finally, appreciation is an integral part of a job well done. We’ll recognize a distinguished manager and board member at our annual convention happening Nov. 1-3 at the Davis Conference Center in Layton. Throughout the year, we’ll highlight our member districts’ achievements and our association’s successes on the legislative front.

But who would expect anything less? At UASD, it’s all in an honest day’s work.
