Family matters

At the Utah Association of Special Districts, we’re family not only because of the many organizations that are united beneath our umbrella but also because of the Utahns we protect daily.

Why is family so important? It’s the backbone of our society and the goal we strive for as we preserve our quality of life. As you come up with your New Year’s resolutions, we are hopeful you’ll find more ways to enjoy family time with your loved ones. Here are a few ideas:

• Prioritize your chores. Divide them into Do, Don’t and Delegate categories. Make good use of the time this prioritization frees up by doing more important things, such as staging snowball fights on Utah’s Wasatch Front.
• Take the kids along. Do this not only on fun trips but also on trips that will serve your children well in the future. Cleaning out the garage? Get them involved. Hand them a shovel when it snows, or pass around the paintbrushes when you are working on a home-improvement project. They will learn valuable life skills and share in the satisfaction of a job well done.
• Work together on a family dinner. This isn’t something you can do every night. But once in a while, try turning over the reins to the younger set. Who knows? You might come up with a new family favorite.
• Use new technology to find new and exciting things to do close to home. It’s important to put some time restraints on the use of electronics–after all, we’re seeing generation of children who have forgotten how to function face-to-face–but all work and no play isn’t much fun. Make time to get out and do something for the pure joy of it.
