Why we do what we do

Why are we in public service? We want to make a difference. That’s the easy answer.

We also like helping people. Through our special districts, we preserve our fellow Utahns’ quality of life. And the Utah Association of Special Districts, among other pursuits, promotes the legislative issues that allow its member associations to do their jobs.

But the broader picture is more complex and offers several good reasons for others to follow our career path:

• At a time when so many in government disappoint people, we have the chance to stand for something positive and shape the future. We’re a voice for the people who live in our districts.

• You can experience personal fulfillment that often isn’t found in the corporate world. There’s a purpose to your efforts and a sense of satisfaction when you succeed. That’s probably the single biggest reason most of us remain in public service.

• If public service is your stepping stone to other pursuits, you’ll benefit from the work experience, the professional networking and the diversity of challenges you face. Who knows? You might receive some recognition along the way that will bolster your reputation in the private sector.
