How is this for great economic news? Utah is No. 1 in the nation for total job growth and unemployment is at a record low. In fact, according to the newly-released 2020 Economic Report to the Governor, every major industrial sector in the state has expanded over the last year, adding a total of 45,600 new jobs to the economy. That’s a year-over-year increase of 3.0 percent.
Fueled by record-level residential and near-record commercial building activity, Utah’s construction sector added 4,500 jobs last year ‚ the fastest rate of job growth of any of Utah’s industry sectors in 2019, with a year-over-year increase of 4.3 percent.
Utah also is seeing strong gains in a number of other industries, such as health care, construction, retail trade and professional and business services. Growth in the professional and business services sectors is particularly important because it includes such occupations as lawyers, architects, computer programmers and engineers, and the average annual wage is above $70,000. In addition to job growth, Utah also ranks high in numerous other measures as well, including quality of life, happiness and recreation.
