We’ve had a great start to 2019. With the 2019 General Legislative Session now at a close, we wanted to provide a recap of some of this year’s highlights and accomplishments.
The 2019 General session began on January 28 of this year and came to a close on March 14 at midnight. The last session was spent shifting, prioritizing, and reconsidering actions on several bills. Many bills of importance to districts were passed and some were amended. Read more about the final day in session here.
Over the course of the legislative session, the Association followed and addressed a record number of bills – 200 total, not including all of the bills that were dropped from our radar during the session. There were more than 20 bills that were amended or substituted. These were changed sufficiently to a point where we either supported the bill or moved to a neutral tracking position. Fifty-five of the 62 bills supported by the Association were passed. Time ran out on some of the ones that did not pass, but some of these bills will be listed to run next year. Thankfully, eight of the remaining bills that we opposed did not pass.
The majority of priority bills that we supported passed and are being enrolled, in preparation to be signed by the governor. April 3 is the last day the governor may sign or veto bills. The normal effective date for bills passed during the session is May 14. For more information about this year’s session, visit our website.
Overall, it’s been an effective and successful legislative session. We appreciate everyone’s hard work on behalf of the districts and want to thank all of those involved.
