No sweat!

With the dog days of summer upon us at the Utah Association of Special Districts – along with a busy schedule of Interim Legislative Sessions – it’s not so easy to keep your cool.

Blame the British! They established what today is our idea of professional dress: business suits and ties. Then again, they don’t have the same summers as we do. While we’re nearing 100 degrees in Utah, they’re hovering in the high 60′s.

Women have it a little easier with a variety of wardrobe choices at their disposal. But what about the guy who knows how much depends on looking well-dressed … and what’s at risk when you’re covered in sweat?

What are your choices?

• Opt for cotton or linen suits. Both are breathable fabrics, a definite asset when temperatures rise. Wool is an option, too; in the right loose weave, it acts as a wick. But go a step further. Before buying the suit and getting alterations, wear it around the store for about 10 minutes. Do you feel like you’re carrying a lot of weight around? Does it naturally move with you or is it as restrictive as the obligatory tie? Make an informed decision!
• Go with lighter colors. You’re not just making a fashion statement here. Dark colors absorb the heat; lighter colors deflect it. Think of desert dwellers who are covered from head to toe in flowing white robes. With the right choices, you too can chill in full-length trousers and a jacket!
• Accessorize. That’s not something you always hear when it comes to menswear. In this case, it’s saving your skin, literally. Invest in a hat and sunglasses, along with a ready supply of sunscreen. Then add the little touches that put you a notch above the rest, the right belt, good shoes and, of course, a tasteful tie.
